INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP COUNSELING SERVICES

Provides individual and/or group encounter to aid students in gaining knowledge of themselves and their environment so that they can make informed decisions and a plan of action.  These services were provided to clients who were mostly walk-in or self-referred Friends, teachers, classmates, etc. may refer students whom they believe are in need of assistance in relation to their concerns and difficulties.

Instructors/Teachers as indispensable Partners in Guidance. The instructor is a unique guidance worker and his/her collaboration with the guidance program is indispensable.  His/her strategic position in the classroom enables him to note students with special problems and needs. 

The counselors and instructors should combine their efforts in a cooperative endeavor to serve the students.  This shared responsibility is more fruitful if the activities of the counselors and instructors augment each other.  To achieve this, the following may be helpful:

  1. sharing information which may be mutually beneficial (within the limits of professional ethics), and
  2. joining efforts in finding solutions to students’ problems.

Instructors have always been very valuable and in fact, indispensable partners in the implementation of guidance and counseling services. 

The most basic and essential relationship that exists in any school is the student-instructor relationship.  A direct relationship between the instructor and students can be found because of the frequent contacts and meetings between them, providing the instructor with opportunities of making observations of the students’ attempt to adjust to the varying situations and conditions of life.

Potential problems can be spotted and adjustment difficulties minimized by the prompt and alert attention of the instructor on the job.  Symptoms and signs of conflicts can be prevented from becoming serious.  The nature of the instructors' guidance functions then assumes a preventive aspect.  The same things cannot be said of the guidance counselor-student relationship. Moreover, this unique relationship allows teachers to identify students who may be showing signs of probable giftedness or who may be in need of attention brought about by their special needs.

Guidance counselors meet the students only when

  1. students seek the help of guidance counselors;
  2. instructors refer students to the guidance counselors because of some observed behavior difficulty on the part of the students and,
  3. counselors call students for test interpretation.

A direct line of contact is established between the students and guidance counselors via the guidance program through the assistance of instructors.  It is developed by the guidance counselors to help the students meet their needs.
